HELI HANGI - A GEOTHERMAL AND CULTURAL EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER
We begin the morning with a private helicopter transfer direct from your luxury lodge to beautiful Lake Rotoiti. We land at the Marae, or local Maori Meeting houses, on the shores of the lake and experience a genuine Maori welcoming, known as a Powhiri. This ancient style of welcoming will be explained by your guide before you arrive to the village, along with any important protocols. Once the welcoming ritual has been completed you will be considered “Tangata Whenua” or people of the land. You essentially become one of the family, or whanau.
We spend time in the Ancestral House or “Whare Tupuna” talking with locals about the rich history of this tribe and the area before making our way to the kitchen where we can all prepare a Hangi meal. A hangi is the traditional method of cooking food underground using super-heated, volcanic hardened river stones. Assisting the chef, we make final preparations with the food before placing it underground to cook.
We then return to our helicopter and continue our adventures while our hangi cooks the required three hours, flying 52kms east off the Bay of Plenty coastline to White Island, New Zealand’s only active marine volcano. The full Maori name for the island is ‘Te Puia o Whakaari’ meaning literally: ‘The Dramatic Volcano’ and was named ‘White Island’ by Captain Cook on October 1, 1769 because it always appeared to be in a cloud of white steam. Words cannot express the experience of walking on the active crater floor of this unique lunar landscape. Active volcanic vents, a steaming Crater Lake, bubbling hot streams and desolate mining ruins combine to create a surreal experience.
Following this unique geothermal adventure, we return back to the Marae via helicopters to lift our delicious hangi lunch. The chefs finish final preparations for our delicious hangi feast overlooking picturesque Lake Rotoiti before we farewell our new friends and make our way back to our lodge.
